Oral Hygiene – Because Prevention is Always Better Than Cure

Who does not like to be greeted with a smile? But what if the smile is such that it ruins your whole day? Yes, a smile showing yellow, cavity infected teeth with a disgusting odor would definitely break a relationship before it is even made. Do you want to shoo away your boss or partner from you? Of course not, this is where “oral hygiene” becomes a matter of prime importance in one’s life.

Very often it is seen that we neglect our oral hygiene or do not give it as much as relevance and importance as we give to physical hygiene. This could be dangerous in the long run. Cavity, tooth breakage, tooth ache, discoloration etc are some of the most common problems associated with the teeth but several clinical studies have shown that there is a linkage between oral hygiene and some chronic diseases like cardiovascular problems, osteoporosis, diabetes complications etc. now, did that not come as a shock to you?? But it is the reality.

It is mandatory for us to practice good dental habits and visit the dentist at least twice a year for a professional clean-up. This would include an overall inspection of the condition of the teeth followed by teeth scaling, polishing and fluoride treatment. Other than this there are some basic dental habits we have to make a part of our daily habits to ensure healthy teeth. Brushing with an inter dental tooth brush twice a day, once in the morning and before going to sleep will prevent damage to teeth. Inter dental brushes prevent damage of dental tissue and are recommended according to the space of the inter dental space. Dental flossing is yet another important part of oral hygiene as it removes the decayed food particles stuck in between the teeth. Many of us ignore tongue cleaning which is very essential to prevent bad odor in the mouth. Oral irrigation is yet another way of ensuring thorough cleaning of the mouth and the dental region. This type of cleaning goes deeper into the gums much farther than the normal brushing and floss.

Going further to the eating habits that have to be followed to maintain healthy and attractive teeth, the foods that keep muscles and bones healthy can be used for gums and teeth also. Vitamin C, vitamin B, zinc and magnesium are some of the minerals required to be consumed. The vitamins can be acquired from fruits and vegetables and the minerals from meat, fish and other poultry products. Minerals like calcium and phosphate which are also essential can be got from milk and cheese. It helps to make the gums stronger and reduces wear and tear of the same. Fluorine is essential to prevent cavity and hence it is required to drink fluorinated water. Green tea reduces bad breath in the mouth and celeries protect the teeth by massaging the teeth and gums.

Sugars such as sucrose and carbonated food are harmful for the teeth. Smoking or chewing tobacco should be strictly avoided. The mouth should be rinsed frequently. Chewing gum aids in oral irrigation around the teeth and hence is encouraged.Proper oral care hence is essential to increase the impact of your smile and keep you away from various diseases.
