Health and Fitness – Motivation and Results

When I signed my contract to join World Gym, they asked me if I wanted to pay an additional fee for an early opt out. I, like most people, declined that option. Unfortunately for most folks, that additional fee probably was a good idea. Gyms are notoriously crowded during January and part of February and then it dramatically tapers off to the ‘usual suspects.’ Another driving force for people is milestone birthdays. Oh, I’m going to be forty, now’s the time to start caring about my health. But shortly after that eventful day, thoughts and habits drift back to normal. How can you keep motivated? How can you prevent this from happening? I have a few suggestions, but I will tell you up front they aren’t especially gentle.

Take a “before” picture. This can be a huge motivating force. (Sorry. I didn’t mean to insert the word huge. But if you already took offense, maybe you should contemplate why. I told you this was going to be blunt.) It should be the least flattering picture that is possible. Guys, don’t suck in your gut or try the subtle flex. Ladies, don’t bother with make-up, or fixing your hair. Stand with you feet shoulder width apart and relax. Let things sag or droop. We need to face facts sometimes, and this is one of those moments. I’ve done this, so I am speaking out of experience.

Wear as little clothing as possible. Guys – a pair of swim trunks is a great choice. Ladies, perhaps that one piece suit you wish fit better. This isn’t for public display. This is your motivation. Take the picture and print it out on your own printer. No one needs to see it but you. I would recommend a front shot, back shot and a profile. You don’t look at you in this frank honest way very often, but it will help you in the long run. We all try to dress to hide flaws and flab, but this is the smack you may need to keep on track.

Now you need to post this picture on the back of your closet door, or on your bathroom mirror or maybe on your refrigerator. When you are thinking about skipping your trip to the gym, or passing on the daily walk, look at that picture and say “is that who I want to be for the rest of my life?” Because if it’s not who you want to be, you need to make consistent effort to change. Eventually there will be after pictures that will make you glad you stuck to the plan.

I hope I haven’t offended anyone with this, but the truth of the matter is, whatever motivates you to get healthier is a plus for you. Sometimes the truth hurts, but the healing that eventually comes is for you and all those who love you.
