Do you find yourself struggling to come up with easy lunches for your kids? You want to feed them something healthy, and school lunches are not always appealing to kids. Not to mention that kids get tired of the same old peanut butter and jelly or ham and cheese sandwich. It’s time to get creative in the kitchen and shake up the way you prepare your child’s lunch. Read on for ten ideas that will make lunch time your child’s favorite subject of the day.

1. Lettuce wraps have become very popular among adults, and there is no reason that kids should be left out. You can fill the wrap with tuna salad, chicken salad or cold cuts. Just place the desired filling in the center of the leaf and roll it up like a tortilla. Secure with a toothpick.

2. Yogurt with granola can be a healthy lunch entrĂ©e if you read the labels and choose a variety of yogurt that is heavy on protein and light on sugar. Also, look for a brand of granola that is low in sugar and high in protein and fiber. Better yet — make your own homemade granola!

3. Hard boiled eggs tend to get overlooked when it comes to kids’ lunches, but a lot of kids love them. They are a great source of protein and very easy to prepare in advance. Just boil a bunch of eggs at the beginning of the week and you will be set. Send along your child’s favorite condiments like salt and pepper or a bit of salad dressing.

4. Cold hot dogs without a bun are a very kid-friendly lunch. Although hot dogs are not always in the healthy category, you can try turkey hot dogs or a brand that is low in sodium and fat. If you have a local meat market whose meat you trust, you can try their homemade hot dogs.

5. Since kids usually love noodles, try making a healthy pasta salad. Use whole grain pasta, low-fat salad dressing and as many vegetables as your child will eat. Finely chopped carrots, celery and cucumber are usually readily accepted by children, but try throwing in a bit of avocado once in a while just for variety. You can even add a bit of chopped chicken or shredded cheese to make a complete meal in a bowl.

6. Kids usually love to eat kebabs or anything that is on a toothpick or skewer. You can make main-dish kebabs with chunks of meat (turkey or chicken), cubes of cheese, grape tomatoes, and chunks of cucumber. Add some fruit kebabs on toothpicks for a complete lunch-on-a-stick.

7. You can get really creative with soft tortillas. Try to find one that has extra fiber but is still soft. Spread a tortilla with peanut butter and jelly, roll it up and cut into small circles; spread with peanut butter and roll up a whole banana in it; use any combination of lean meat, shredded cheese, chopped lettuce, sliced cucumbers, shredded carrots, etc. This is similar to the dreaded “sandwich,” but you can make it different by slicing it into thin rounds after it is rolled up. Provide some ranch dressing or another favorite for dipping.

8. Make a super protein wrap by wrapping a stick of low-fat string cheese in a slice of lean sandwich meat. Secure with a toothpick.

9. Apple slices dipped in peanut butter can be a main dish if your child will consume at least a serving of peanut butter. Otherwise, pack a string cheese to ensure a full serving of protein.

10. You can make your own version of a popular packaged meal by cutting small squares of lean sandwich meat and low-fat cheese to put on crackers. Whole wheat crackers would be ideal, but read labels to find a healthy option that your child will actually eat.

Kids need a healthy satisfying lunch while at school so they can focus and perform well during their afternoon classes. Many kids get tired of sandwiches day in and day out, so try some of the easy lunches for kids listed above to keep lunch time nutritious and exciting.
