Organic food is a term used for food produced according to certain agreed technical standard of production, that is grown without the use of pesticides, man-made fertilizers, preservatives or artificial colorings, etc. As for livestock, they are to be reared without the use of antibiotics, growth hormones and must not be genetically modified.

In many other countries, organic food producers are required to obtain organic certification in order to market their food product as organic. For consumers, look out for organic certification on product packaging such as “certified organic” to serve as product assurance.

Organic food is getting more popular nowadays despite prices can be double or even triple that of normal food price at supermarkets. This is because they are deemed as a healthy food source and people are getting more health conscious. Chemical-free foodstuff do not cure existing illnesses but are generally believed to lower the risk of intoxicating our bodies, thereby lead to less health problems.

In some places, farmers had turned to plant organic crops or rear organic livestocks as the revenue is higher. But produce that are naturally grown tend to be more prone to insects and pests which could affect the quantity of produce. The increase in organic food sources definitely will benefit consumers and hopefully the price will drop as competition rises. But as of now, consumers will still have to bare with the high prices and scarce food sources, restaurants and eating outlets.
