Many people know that they do not do enough exercise to keep fit and healthy. Most of them are also aware of the health and emotional benefits of keeping fit. However, many of them do not do enough or even worse they do not do any at all. Why is this?

There can be several reasons why people do not make the effort to exercise. Part of that answer can be linked to effort. Taking regular exercise takes commitment which means it does take effort to keep going. But like anything else the more you do something the more it becomes a habit.

People make many excuses not to take regular exercises. They say things that they don’t have the time, they cannot afford gym fees etc. These excuses are just that, excuses. It mostly stems from a lack of motivation. Many people who are not motivated to exercise wait around for motivation to come along to get them going. Unfortunately, life or motivation does not work that way. Your motivation comes from within you, it is not an external thing.

The reality is that when it comes to making the effort to do exercise especially for the first time or if you have not done it for a while, you will probably find it difficult to get yourself motivated. Getting started is the hardest part. Once you get over the initial inertia you will find that it gets easier because by taking action you create momentum. When you have momentum then it can carry you through. It makes things easier and smoother.

Therefore, it is important to realise that you should not wait around for external things to motivate you to do exercise. Look within you to find the reasons why you want to do it. Waiting for motivation to knock on your door can become an eternal waiting game. The crucial element is taking action. Taking action is everything. When you take action the excuses begin to fade away.
