More Health Care Truths

In this article the question is: What determines your overall Health? The President of the United States would have you believe your health is dependent on you owning health insurance. But is your health really dependent on you owning health insurance? In my book I define health insurance as “a financial plan that may or may not pay for your health needs.” I also contend in the book that owning health insurance doesn’t guarantee you will enjoy better health. Let me relate a real-life example that happened a couple months ago. My cousin suffered a stroke that left one side of his body severely impaired. He lives alone, which complicates his recovery, and he has required hospitalization.

This is a good teaching moment, because the health insurance didn’t protect him from having a stroke. For now, his health insurance has been paying for his recovery but he has been notified that his policy is reaching its liability limits. To continue his rehabilitation he must decide either to pay cash for his rehab expenses, or give up his assets and rely on Medicaid for the rest of his life. An unconfirmed complication to his situation is a report that he is also problems with his eyesight because of the stroke.

Do you still think that the President, who engineered passage of the Affordable Care Act that will financially punish every American who doesn’t own a health insurance policy. I personally don’t believe he has the constitutional authorization to impose such a burden.

What should be of concern to every American, and especially the President, is being aware that health is individual to everyone. A few years ago I suffered a stroke and learned I was a diabetic. The stroke left me unable to walk normally, my speech is slurred, and my right hand has limited usefulness. Because of the diabetes, I have to be injected with insulin daily and I have to be careful what I eat. But those are my health concerns. What about your health concerns? What are the health issues you deal with now, or will have to deal with in the future? See, our health issues were pre-determined at our birth, through the DNA created at our birth. How well we eat and exercise daily will favorably or un-favorably influence our DNA and by extension our overall health.

The individuals I have spoken with about our terrible health care system, and especially if they don’t agree with me, usually ask what I would do to replace the current system. My answer is always the same: “There is no health care system that will work, if it includes the government.” The government has been involved in health care for almost fifty years and it has done nothing but get progressively worse, and that’s the truth and I have lived through it.
